A Letter to American Democracy

Dear American Democracy:

This week you will be exposed to vile falsehoods. Politicians who have taken oaths to uphold the constitution, will lie and lie and try to harm you only for their own gain. Hoping to pick up future votes of a population who has been lied to and may not see what is at stake. Be strong. You are wise and old now. Do not succumb to their efforts to weaken you. You are the example the world has looked to … you will prevail.

John Adams may be repenting in heaven for how we have lost our way. He foresaw the possibility that our beloved democracy could be squandered when he wrote: “Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.”

The world is watching. We are seen differently than we have been since our founding. We are seen as a frail, potentially failing and at the very least faltering, democracy. Those who do not see the dangers are fooling themselves or have no sense of history. Churchill saw Hitler’s dangerous moves before others in Parliament did because he had studied the cult of personality when he wrote his famous historical biography of his relative John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. Through his famous four volume work “His Life and Times,” Churchill researched and wrote about Louis XIV whose absolute monarchy led to long wars and battles in Europe. The cult of personality defined Louis XIV and Churchill recognized the dangers that can result.

American Democracy, you have never been controlled by a malevolent “leader” with no sense of propriety or history. The greatness of that moment when Washington peacefully passed power to Adams at Philadelphia in our great experiment that has lasted over 200 years, is lost on the current president. The rule of law, our courts, have consistently ruled against his baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election. His pathology and inability to accept his loss is motivating him to push you to the brink. The denial and denigration of the rule of law, by politicians claiming the false narrative for their presumed future plans to pick up the current GOP base, is not only unpatriotic, but it is most certainly not a “good Use” of our cherished freedoms.

American Democracy in our country, is our country. If we lose our way now, if we lose you, future generations will have to cope with Adams’ repentance in Heaven. And we will be scorned as the generation who failed to preserve our beloved freedoms.

Sincerely,

The Huddled Masses Yearning to Breathe Free
